On Friday’s Mosen Explosion, we celebrate the 60th anniversary of a night that changed music, culture and television forever.

On the night of February 9, 1964, a then record-breaking estimated 73 million Americans tuned into CBS to watch the Ed Sullivan Show, a popular variety program that featured singers, comedians, actors and other performers. But this night was different from any other, because the show's main attraction was a British rock band that had taken the world by storm: The Beatles. They had landed in New York to chaotic scenes just two days earlier.

Do you remember what you were doing on February 4, 2023? Likely not, but as music is a powerful trigger for memory, perhaps listening to this week's episode of Come by the Hills, originally aired on February 4, 2023, will bring that day back as though it were yesterday! Ah well, we can hope, can't we? The truth is that things are rather frenetic around here, in a good way thankfully, so I've decided to do a rerun of Come by the Hills despite my promise last week that I wouldn't.

The "Juke In The Back" focuses on the " soul that came before rock n' roll," the records that inspired Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and countless others.
Lionel Hampton's big band was a training ground for so many of the all-time great musicians: Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Dexter Gordon, Joe Morris, Dinah Washington, Wes Montgomery, Little Jimmy Scott and Clifford Brown.

This week on Deep Dive we enjoy the wonderful music of Gladys Knight and the Pips. We feel like making love, meeting the one and only, and enjoying every beat of my heart.

It’s Jonathan Mosen dropping in to let you know that as has become a tradition on Mushroom FM, Anthony and I will be celebrating Waitangi Day, which is new Zealand’s national day. We’ll be playing three hours of great kiwi music, slipping in a few old radio and TV ads and talking about some interesting aspects of New Zealand culture. If you’re a new Zealander, you’ll be singing along and hearing songs you may not have heard for years. If you’re not a New Zealander, you may just hear a few songs that become your favourites.

After you've enjoyed Come By The Hills with Sara Hillis, tomorrow afternoon from 02:00 PM to 05:00 PM, don't touch that dial, device, PC, Mac, smart speaker or tablet and join me for The Early Years, where and when you'll hear the best music from the first quarter century of the Rock and Roll era with occasional nods to other decades and genres.

There is very exciting news from Loreena McKennitt-land! On March 8th, 2024, her new live album, The Road Back Home, will become available. This is a collection of performances taken from a couple of different folk festivals she played at last year, and it consists of songs she sang during the earlier part of her career, traditional for the most part. Well, on tomorrow's show, we've got one of those songs for you on Come by the Hills, along with three hours of great Folk and Celtic music as usual. I can't wait!

Who said wishes can’t come true, eh? We had new ABBA music in 2021, even a new Beatles song in 2023, now Billy Joel has broken his long musical drought with a brand new song. No word yet on whether this is the first single from a forthcoming album.
