Mushroom Hash. All about our Mastodon Hashtag
We encourage people who toot on Mastodon about Mushroom FM to use our hashtag, #MushroomFM.
What’s a hashtag, we hear you cry? Well that’s a good question and we're glad you asked it. Pull up a chair.
Ahem. A hashtag is a keyword that serves as a way of grouping toots together by subject. It’s called a hashtag because it always starts with a number sign, which in some parts of the world is also known as the hash symbol. It’s a fantastic way of creating a global virtual chat room around an event, bringing people closer together, helping you connect with friends doing the same thing you are, and making new friends along the way. And that’s exactly what Mushroom FM is all about.
Have you ever been reading toots about your favourite TV show and seen a number sign followed by a key word? That’s a hashtag.
The advantage of using a hashtag is that you can read toots from people tooting about that subject even if you’re not following them.
All you have to do to use a hashtag is to write it in your toot. It can be anywhere in the toot, but it’s a good idea to keep it at the end, particularly when you know a lot of screen reader users will be participating.
So your toot might look like this.
It's great to have the fun guys keeping me company while I clean the house. #MushroomFM
People tracking the #MushroomFM hashtag will see that tweet, even if they’re not following you.
There’s another important reason to use the Hashtag – good old-fashioned etiquette, and Mastodon courtesy. Many Mastodon clients have easy filters that allow users to filter out Hashtags from their timeline. We're sure there can’t be too many of your followers who wouldn’t want to hear all about what the fun guys are up to, but you know, just in case…Using the hashtag is the considerate thing to do.
One important thing to know. Your tagged tweets will only be visible to those not following you if your updates are unprotected.
Your Mastodon client's documentation should be able to tell you how to track our hashtag, so you can join in the ongoing conversation and hang out with fun guys and listeners. But if you get stuck, ask us using the hashtag, and one of the fun guys or listeners will be glad to help out.
Enjoy your mushroom hash. It's cholesterol free.
