On the next Mosen at Large, Larry Skutchan, what's cookin', and plenty of listener feedback
Kia ora everyone. As always I’m looking forward to the next time we get together for another episode of Mosen At Large.
First, thanks so much for the overwhelming response I’ve received to the last episode on going low carb. I am glad it has helped and inspired so many people to investigate further. We have some questions and comments coming in for the next show, and if you have anything to contribute on this subject you are most welcome.
On that episode, we had a brief discussion about blind people in the kitchen. It got me thinking that this is an area where it is particularly easy for well-meaning sighted family members to over-protect us. For a lot of blind people, knowing how to cook for ourselves and produce nutritious food safely is a cause for anxiety. We obviously can’t learn by seeing what our parents do and how they prepare food. We need hands on. I’m sure it would help many people if we shared our experiences of how we learned to cook, tips and tricks for the new or aspiring blind cook, and of course any gadgets, high-tech or not, that are particularly blind-friendly in the kitchen. What is your signature dish, and why?
Boy, there sure has been a lot of buzz about the Mantis from APH lately. But if you’ve been on a different planet in recent weeks, the Mantis is a 40-cell Braille display with a qwerty keyboard, a few built-in features, and connectivity to almost every device where Braille displays are supported. If the word “legend” can be used to describe anyone in the blindness tech industry, it most certainly can be applied to Larry Skutchan. Dreamer, thinker, innovator, pioneer podcaster and screen reader developer, Larry has made a profound difference to many lives. He joins me to talk about the Mantis, Nearby Explorer Online and much more, including some very welcome news for users of Studio Recorder, one of the best ways to record spoken word content on your computer.
We’ll do some reminiscing about old technology, an opponent of my Apple public beta petition has had a change of heart, and much more.
You are very welcome, and in fact encouraged, to get contributions in ahead of time. Please don’t be shy, I’d love to hear from you. To contribute, send an email with an audio attachment or just written down to Jonathan at MushroomFM.com, or call the listener line, +18646066736, that’s 1-864-60Mosen.
The best way to hear Mosen At Large is when it airs live and in full on Mushroom FM at 2 PM Eastern, 7 PM UK on Saturday. It will then be available in abridged form on the Mosen At Large podcast, available anywhere you get podcasts.
Thank you so much for listening and contributing to the show, and see you soon for Mosen At Large.
