The Mosen Explosion goes on-location for our Apollo 11 celebration
Sorry to disappoint you, but when I say “on-location”, we’re not quite getting to the moon to host this week’s show. I put in a proposal, but unfortunately it wasn’t approved by our miserly Mushroom FM Budget Director.
Nevertheless, we are indeed heading out of the studio for some of this week’s show, as Bonnie, Heidi and I head to Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand, to examine some moon rock. We’ll tell you the story behind how New Zealand ended up with it, and Heidi will read a newspaper story from the day of the moon landing from 50 year old newsprint.
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin will talk about their lunar adventures, and we’ll ask you to be the judge. Did Neil Armstrong fluff the first words ever spoken by a human on another world?
Bonnie, who like me is also a space nut, will join me for part of the show to talk about the Apollo missions and the people who made them happen.
We have the honour to be on the air 50 years ago to the second that humans first touched down on the moon. We’ll play the moon landing at exactly the time it happened 50 years later, but perhaps it will be a version you’ve not heard before as we bring you some of the internal comms from the Mission Control team at Houston.
When there’s time for some tunes, they’ll all be about the moon and space.
But most important of all, I’d love to get your own memories of humankind’s greatest technological and exploratory achievement to date. If you can remember the day, share with our audience what you recall about it, where you were, who you were with, and whether you expected we would have been well-established on other worlds by now. If you don’t remember the day, what does it mean to you? Are you excited about the repeated promises that we’re going back to the moon and beyond?
And don’t forget that for the full 24 hours of the 20th US Eastern time, our sister station, Mushroom Escape, will be bringing you documentaries and media coverage from that amazing day in 1969. You won’t want to miss it.
It’s our Apollo 11 50th anniversary special, with your favourite lunatic, Jonathan Mosen. At 2 PM Eastern, 7 PM UK, 6 AM in New Zealand, On Mushroom FM, the FM standing for finally on the moon.
