What is the Big Beat all about?
The Big Beat refers to the music of the period just after the Second World War through to the early sixties. Rock'n'roll evolved as a blend of various musical styles and the changes in society as racial barriers broke down.
On The Big Beat Radio Show you will hear Rockabilly, Hillbilly, Doo Wop, Rhythm and Blues, Gospel, Cajun and Zydeco. We will also explore the roots of the music, the sounds that the artists of the fifties were influenced by in the thirties and forties.
But mostly you will hear real good rock'n'roll from the fifties and also the very best of the many bands that keep the rock rolling in the 21st Century. We will keep you up to date on new releases, and happenings on the rock'n'roll scene around the world today.
About me!
My name is Peter Scanlon. I live in Melbourne, Australia. I have been a dedicated enthusiast of rock'n'roll all my life. As a teenager in the mid sixties, I was scanning the radio dial, looking for the "oldies" from the fifties. In the seventies, like many others seeking real rock'n'roll, we formed clubs, attended dances and collected records of the Big Beat.
I joined the Australian Rock'n'Roll Appreciation Society back then and have been editing their Big Beat of the '50s magazine for the past ten years. In recent years the scene has continued to grow, the internet has allowed rockers from around the world to communicate, buy and sell music, collectables, and listen to specialist shows. Now Mushroom FM presents The Big Beat Radio Show every week, 6-8 pm Eastern on Tuesday.
