This week on A Cuppa at the Mosens, a convention survival guide

A Cuppa at the Mosens is the live, global call-in show that discusses issues of significance to the blind community. At present, much of our US audience is anticipating the US blindness conventions, and many of our listeners outside the US wonder what they’re really like. The American Council of the Blind will be beginning their convention at the end of the week, and the National Federation of the Blind’s convention will follow the week after. So let’s talk conventions this week.

Bonnie and I have attended many conventions of both organisations. If you’ve attended one of these big conventions, what’s it like? Do you feel a sense of belonging when thousands of blind people take over a hotel, or is it all a little overwhelming?

There’s so much to do. What planning can you do ahead of time to ensure you get the best experience from your time at one of these conventions?

If you’ve been to both NFB and ACB conventions, what similarities and differences are there between the way the two conventions are run? Given a choice, which one would you rather attend and why?

Speaking specifically about this year, what resolution topics do you think each convention is likely to debate, and what do you hope will be the outcomes of those debates?

In an era where it’s easy to get together and share ideas online, and with travel in the US being quite unpleasant at times, have the conventions lost any of their lustre or purpose?

There’s so much to talk about, and as always, we welcome a diversity of perspectives and experiences.

If you use either the Firefox or Chrome web browsers, you can call in via your computer for free, in high-quality audio. Otherwise, there are phone numbers around the world.
